Description
Self-portrait as Joan of Arc
"One life is all we have and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrifice what you are and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying." - Joan of Arc
Creating this image started out as something simple, with no intention at all of the finished product. I was just playing with a composite image of a metal sphere and I uploaded a picture of myself to see where it would take me. No sooner did I reveal my face under the sphere photo I started seeing that it resembled a warrior and then Joan of Arc came to mind. I became obsessed with working this image for hours and hours. No sooner than I completed it, I asked for my mother's opinion because I was very proud of the finished product, and she did not like it at all. "I don't like it, you look dead. Well not dead, it's just that you sort of look Demonic and Angelic all at once. You know Joan of Arc is a myth, she is not really a saint, she was just a warrior." Let's look it up mom, The first thing she told me was, "I made a mistake, she is a Saint. Oh look May 30th is The Feast of St, Joan of Arc. Hmm During her trial she was thought to be possessed and a heretic oh and look it was years later after her court records were revealed, that The Pope made her a Saint"
So look at the image again mom, how do you feel about it now? Well I guess I would say that you Captured St. Joan of Arc very well. She is a Warrior and a Saint.
My thoughts, Her day is 5 days away, my Catholic Confirmation name is Joan for Joan of Arc, It is Memorial Day weekend and I am a U.S. Navy Veteran, and I felt absolutely compelled to create this image, hours of work, and re-work. I did not know about her day, I knew that I have always felt like a warrior inside, and I bow to no one and that St. Joan of Arc was the only Saint that had traits and values that I could relate to. So as the Feast of Saint Joan of Arc approaches it is in her honor I present my version of her
